Charlie Sheen's Christmas in jail has inspired the actor and his wife, Brooke Mueller, to seek counseling despite the fact that Sheen reportedly pulled a knife during their latest fight.

The couple plan to get professional help after engaging in a heated argument during which, according to TMZ, Sheen threatened Mueller with a knife in his possession.

When police arrived on the scene, they allegedly saw marks on Mueller's body, though it has not been confirmed if they are related to the weapon, TMZ reports.

"They were fighting at a dinner in a friend’s house and it continued until the next morning," a source close to Mueller told PEOPLE magazine. "Both of them were drinking and neither was supposed to be. They both have histories of alcohol abuse and have made every effort to stop. But things got out of hand."

RadarOnline previously reported that Mueller, 32, went off the rails when Sheen, 44, confronted her about her excessive partying. Mueller proceeded to call 911 and reportedly told police her husband had choked her. She later recanted.

Sheen was sent to jail in Aspen, Colo. Friday morning on domestic violence charges and another charge involving 'a deadly weapon,' now alleged to be a knife.

The actor was released that night after posting $8,500 bond and will appear in court on Feb. 8.

A restraining order under Colorado law prevents the actor from contacting his wife during this time.

"Charlie went right back to Los Angeles after he was released from jail," the source told PEOPLE. "Both he and Brooke will undergo counseling and Charlie will get anger management counseling."

The actor's Colorado attorney, Richard Cummins, confirms that the couple are trying to work things out.

"They have two children together and they love one another and they’re going to work through what is a difficult time and they’re going to do that together and as privately as possible," he told PEOPLE.

Since the fight, rumours have circulated that the couple were separated and planned to divorce.

However, Sheen's manager denied the allegations Saturday on RadarOnline.

"I have spoken to all parties concerned. There are no plans for divorce," Mark Burg told the gossip site. "They are both deeply upset about what happened and are trying to work things out amicably."

Mueller and Sheen were married last year and have two children together.
